Cultural Overload
Drawing
Inspired by my school study tour, my work explores the embarrassment of riches held in Italian cities, churches and museums. Many artists have responded to their Italian Grand Tour and my practice follows that tradition. In my work I wanted to create the effect of richness, but also the exhaustion of gallery fatigue and cultural overload. My work intentionally resembles the works of Piranesi and Canaletto who created 'postcards for Grand Tourists'. However, I used the continuous line drawing and mosaic-like effects of Del Kathryn Barton to create a sense both of wandering and of fleeting impressions.
