Requiem: a mass for the repose of the souls of the dead. My work presents the delicate balance between mortality and transcendence through the subject matter of a still life, suspended in glassy preservation and frigid existence. The ‘nakedness’ of poultry, exposing the opulence and beauty of traditions embedded in the Baroque European culture of the early 16th century, is contrasted with the disposable quality of meat within our materialistic society. This grotesque twist on a traditionally ornate subject matter provides a contemporary perspective on the mistreatment of animals by the meat industry. More widely, it alludes to the public sphere of mass production and consumerism.
