My work appropriates typical Renaissance representations of passive women and replaces them with young, educated girls from the contemporary era. I used a technique of 'light painting' to achieve soft lines and a sense of ambiguity in the subject that is reminiscent of paintings by Vermeer in his Renaissance context. By including only a small number of items in each photograph, the viewer is able to focus on the representation of today's youth in an environment laden with domestic connotations. An air of silence surrounds each subject, mirroring the quiet, meditative moments that punctuate the lives of young women today.
