Citizen of the Year nominees

Bronwyn Afflick

Bronwyn Afflick has provided quality support to people with disability in the Sutherland Shire for over 20 years. She also organises programs for people with disability to volunteer within the community, fosters children, and has actively participated in Surf Life Saving Australia for many years.

Paul Owens 2019 Sutherland Shire Citizen of the Year Nominee

Paul Owens

Dr Paul Owens' tireless energy enables and empowers his team of educators to deliver outstanding learning outcomes in order to produce a generation of young Australians who are globally aware and passionately active citizens.

Jill Peters

Jill Peters has taught over 1000 Shire children during her 40 years at Miranda Kindergarten. She is a truly wonderful teacher to her students and mentor to her staff.

Irene Stoboi 2019 Sutherland Shire Citizen of the Year Nominee

Irene Stoboi

Irene has been nominated twice for dedication to keeping her Heathcote neighbourhood tidy by picking up litter during her daily walks over the past 30 years. She has been an active member of the Heathcote Progress Association and View Clubs.

Ann Turnbull

Ann Turnbull volunteers as a Support Group Facility for Chrohn's and Colitis Australia, and runs the Sutherland Shire Support Group.

Young Citizen of the Year nominees

Drew Anderson 2019 Sutherland Shire Young Citizen of the Year Nominee

Drew Anderson

Drew is a responsible and hardworking student striving for excellence and overcoming challenges. She regularly volunteers within her school community.

Mia Bruce

Mia believes strongly in the core values of citizenship. She volunteers as a basketball coach for 4 - 12 year olds on weekends.

Hayden Charles

Hayden Charles is an active volunteer within our community and has participated in a number of initiatives over the past year including Youth Council, Youth Week, and working with the State Emergency Service.

Ellie Isemonger

Ellie Isemonger has been an active member of her school's Student Representative Council since year 7 and regularly volunteers at school open nights, the Sutherland Shire Music Festival, and many fundraising activities.

Claire Pearson 2019 Sutherland Shire Young Citizen of the Year Nominee

Claire Pearson

Claire Pearson is a member of the Special Olympics Sydney Southern swim team and has represented NSW on numerous occasions. In April she was chosen as the Team Captain for the NSW Swim Team in a mentor capacity.

Cooper Savides

Cooper is a regular volunteer at his school and is currently undertaking his Duke of Edinburgh Award. He also coaches and mentors young football players for the Titans Football Club, and coaches swimmers with Special Olympics Australia.

Matt Winston nominated for Sutherland Shire Young Citizen of the Year 2019

Matthew Winston

Matthew is participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards this year and regularly volunteers with St Vincent de Paul and his local tennis club.

3 Bridges - Early Years Support Service

A unique community service helping local families in need at the time of a newborn addition to their family.

Horizon Youth

Horizon Youth welcomes all young people every Friday night to assist them through difficult times, offer support, and provide a chance to interact with their peers through music, games, and motivational speaking.

Shire Woodworkers Club

Every year the Shire Woodworkers Club makes hundreds of toys for the hospital and other local organisations. In coming together to share their love of working with wood, these men are helping each other as well as the wider community.

St George & Sutherland Community College

The college is a not-for-profit community organisation based at Jannali. In its almost 40 years of operations over 180,000 "learners' have come through its doors. SGSCC provides employment for over 300 carers, teachers, tutors, and support staff.

Sutherland Shire Family Services

Sutherland Shire Family Services is a local community organisation providing a range of support services for families, in particular, those that have been impacted by disadvantage, violence, and trauma.
