2017 Sutherland Shire Citizen of the Year is Pam Brown

Pam has been an active and outstanding contributor to Sutherland Shire community organisations for over a decade; dedicating significant time and expertise in both unpaid and paid community work. She works with passion and determination to help make life better for vulnerable people

2017 Sutherland Shire Young Citizen of the Year is Christina Emmanouel

Christina has a passion for youth and disability services. She is a volunteer with Vinnies where she is an Advanced Trained Leader on Kids and Teens Respite programs and with Camp Quality where she assists as a companion to kids with cancer.

2017 Sutherland Shire Community Group of the Year is Rotary Club of Cronulla

Cronulla Rotary is made up of members who are hardworking and embrace their responsibilities to help their community and to improve our world.

Citizen of the Year nominees:

Mark Henry

Mark has used his experience and skill as a mechanic to assist the local community with odd-jobs from repair of wheelchairs in nursing homes and line marking machines for sporting groups to construction of podiums and awnings for BBQ fundraising events.


Trevor Kimber

Trevor has given his time freely for many years to the youth of the Sutherland Shire through volunteering and teaching the skills of basketball.


Lynette Marslew

Lynette has been volunteering for twenty years at Enough is Enough Anti Violence Movement Inc. She is on every fundraising committee and is constantly donating prizes, time, ideas and energy into the organisation.


Brian Thompson

Brian has been a contributor to Surf Life Saving and the Sutherland Shire community for the past 44 years. He currently serves with the Elouera Surf Life Saving Club and is on the Board of Directors for the Sutherland District Trade Union Club providing service and support to our community.


Madeline Tynan-Davey

Madeline has been a wonderful support of the community and a leader in fundraising for the charities she supports such as the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation.


John Williams

John has been a committed coach and committee member for Little Athletics and soccer for many years as well as a long term foster parent and active member of the Bridge Youth Refuge.


Young Citizen of the Year nominees:

Tait Barnes

Tait is a long term member of his high school’s Student Representative Council and is currently the school captain. He is also a respected mentor and coach for youth Rugby League teams.


Elizabeth Bourke

Elizabeth has been a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer at Sutherland Library and is involved in the running of the library’s prominent Young Adult Author event.



Community Group of the Year nominees

Greenlight Movement Learn to Drive Mentor Program

Greenlight Movement - nominee for Community Group of the Year 2017

The Greenlight Movement assists local disadvantaged and at-risk youth to achieve their drivers licence by matching them with community volunteers who then mentor their charges in a supplied vehicle and ultimately, assisting to increase employment opportunities and community cohesion.


Lions Club of Caringbah


The Lions Club of Caringbah was formed in 1957 and was the first Lions Club in the Sutherland Shire. Their signature contribution to our community was the role they played in the establishment of Sylvanvale. They play an active part in fundraising for Sutherland Hospital, local schools and provided hands on help to the frail and needy.


Orana NSW Inc

Orana Breakfast Hub Volunteers

Orana is a grassroots community group that has been helping vulnerable and financially disadvantaged residents since the late 1960s with drop-in services for the socially isolated and assistance with struggling families and the homeless.


Sutherland Shire Lioness Club

Sutherland Shire Lionesses cheque presentation

The Lioness Club of Sutherland Shire celebrate their 38th anniversary with a membership of 35 selfless community minded women who donate their time to assist financially, culturally, socially and morally the disabled, disadvantaged and infirm within the local community.


Sutherland Shire parkruns

parkruns - nominated for Community Group of the Year 2017

parkruns at Menai and Cronulla provide a free and community-spirited event each week that encourages young and old to meet their neighbours in a healthy pursuit for fitness and wellbeing. It is run by volunteers who welcome elite and slow runners of all ages, walkers, parents with prams, and dogs on leashes.
