Bonna Point Boat Ramp Upgrade, Kurnell
A new double boat ramp and floating pontoon at the western end of Silver Beach.
Reason For Works
Bonna Point boat ramp is Council's only publicly accessible boat ramp on the shores of Botany Bay. The upgrade provides better facilities for the launching and retrieval of boats.
Scope of works
The previous single-lane boat ramp has been replaced with a two-lane boat ramp and boat holding pontoon.
The upgrade also included the installation of navigation aids and signage to assist in the protection of seagrass. The presence of Posidonia seagrass presented a unique challenge for planning and design of the works. In order to gain NSW Fisheries approval, Council developed a plan for a seagrass protection zone adjacent to the boat ramp. Customised signage informs boat users of the need to conserve the Posidonia bed and the action they should take to avoid damage. The plan and signage came about as a result of extensive consultation with Fisheries NSW and NSW Roads & Maritime Services. Both authorities are positive about the outcome, and the project is seen as an important case study in collaboration between local government and NSW State authorities in protecting Posidonia seagrass.
