Council is providing funds for the Sutherland Shopping Centre upgrade works and has obtained matching grant funding under the Australian Government's community infrastructure program.
The upgrade commenced in 2010 and will be completed in four stages. Works for Stage 1 and 2 has now been primarily completed with remainder of works to be completed once the installation and certification process of undergrounding power cable finalised. Sutherland will see Stage 4 progressing to construction in May 2012. See brief description below for inclusion in each stages of works.

Stage 1
The first stage of the upgrade works boundaries extend along Gray Street and Eton Street between President Avenue and Eton Lane, President Avenue between Old Princes Highway and Eton Street, and extending north on the east side of Old Princes Highway between President Avenue and Boyle Lane.
The works in stage 1 includes an upgrade to the existing roundabout on the corner of President Avenue and Old Princes Highway. The upgrade to the roundabout improves the existing turning circle for trucks, creating a safer manoeuvre for large vehicles and a safer realigned crossing point for pedestrians.
Stage 2

The boundaries for Stage 2 includes Boyle Street between Old Princes Highway and Eton Street, and Old Princes Highway between Boyle Lane and McCubbens Lane.
As part of the upgrade, traffic in Boyle Street, Sutherland has been restricted to one way westbound as of 6th June 2011. Accordingly, right turn movements from Old Princes Highway to Boyle Street and from Boyle Street to Old Princes Highway will be prohibited. The upgrade works have resulted with a widened footpath width on the south side of street, which can cater for outdoor-eating opportunities, create a pedestrian friendly environment, improve designated crossing points with a narrowed carriageway and also allow planting of significant street trees.
Stage 3
The third stage of the upgrade works includes southern side of Flora Street and Old Princes Highway, from McCubbens Lane up to the end of one-way loop road further north. Stage 3 is currently on hold due to future planning works to Sutherland railway bridge by the Ministry of Transport.
Stage 4
The boundaries of Stage 4 includes Eton Street between McCubbens Lane and President Avenue. Works for Stage 4 is scheduled to commenced by April 2012. The works will include replacement of all footpath to match the new Shopping Centre standard and improvement of pedestrian crossway at laneways.
