Drawing classes
Often thought of as the basis for all art, drawing can be considered a distinct discipline in itself. Classes at Hazelhurst include Drawing the Figure, a very popular program that introduces anatomy and various drawing materials, and Drawing Concepts, designed to give you the fundamentals.
Drawing the Figure
Learn to draw the figure or improve your skills in the exploration of the human form. Observation, proportion, media, technique, use of line and tone will be included in this course. Suitable for beginners and experienced artists.

Drawing Concepts
Beginners and experienced students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the uses and techniques of drawing in this class. Students can use a range of drawing media, including charcoal, pencil, graphite and ink. The program will develop skills in perspective and tone drawing from the still life, landscape and figure. Includes one model sessions.

Drawing Foundations
If you haven't had much experience in drawing and you would like to get started then this is the class for you. Designed for students with little or no experience, the course introduces you to the basics of drawing through the use of several drawing media: pencil, charcoal, inks, pastel and pen. An understanding of tone, texture, perspective and composition will be developed throughout the course. Students will experience drawing from still life, photographic images and their own imaginations.

Drawing with Colour
Using your drawing media of choice (pencils, inks, soft pastels, oil pastels), students will investigate colour theory and explore drawing techniques suited to that media. Term classes will include the themes of still life, landscape, drawing from photographic images and life drawing.

Drawing The Figure Extension Class
Learning to draw the figure has been a basic aspect of art practice for centuries. This class provides an opportunity for students interested in an intensive day of life drawing to extend their skills. A model will be present for the two 3 hour sessions and you will be guided through a series of drawing exercises from the figure. Learn from life and enjoy a day of drawing.

Painting classes
Learn to paint or develop skills in a variety of painting media. Classes are available in acrylics, oils, watercolours, and pastel painting. Pastel painting explores the use of oil and chalk pastels.
Experimental Art
This course is aimed at experienced students who want to explore and extend their painting skills. The focus will be on creative and considered works that are the result of a creative process, which will be recorded in artists' diaries. This is an opportunity to make developed works with new approaches.

Painting for Beginners
The course is designed for beginners in oil painting although acrylics and their uses will be demonstrated later in the course. You are guided through a series of painting exercises, beginning with colour mixing and understanding the colour wheel. All the basics will be covered, i.e. preparing painting surfaces, the use of different tools for painting and cleaning up after painting. This is a traditionally based and landscape-influenced course, which will cover observation techniques, still-life subjects, sketching before a painting, how to paint from photographs and understanding composition and perspective. The tutor will take you through some paintings using step-by-step exercises and you will be also be encouraged to develop your own style.

Painting and Drawing
This course is designed for all levels of ability. You will be shown how to develop drawing skills to enhance composition structure, subject definition and tone. Self expression will be encouraged as you explore painting techniques utilising colour and light. Visual demonstrations will assist you to understand methods used to achieve creative artwork through different mediums. This is a traditionally based and landscape-influenced course, which will cover colour mixing using primary colours, tonal scale and complementing colours; drawing techniques; positive and negative shapes; composition and perspective in colour and drawing. The teacher will demonstrate painting techniques and the class can include painting from overhead slides, photographs and still life.

Painting For Beginners III
This course covers the very foundations of painting and will demystify painting equipment and techniques using acrylic paints and mediums.Learn about brushes, acrylic paints, acrylic mediums, supports and how to use this media to create different effects in your artwork. Working from photographs and other visual examples session you will tackle a different subject every four weeks.

Open Class - All Media
If you are undecided about which media to try, join the open class where you can try them all. Watercolours, oils, acrylics, drawing or pastels; do one or the whole lot. For your first class, just bring basic drawing equipment and discuss your interests with your teacher. Have a go! The class is suitable for beginners and more experienced students.

Oils and Acrylics
Learn to paint or improve your skills in this class that is designed for beginners and intermediate standard students. You can paint in oils or acrylics focussing on still life or landscape subjects and learning about materials and techniques. Students will be given tuition in colour composition and tonal work from real life subject matter. Some classes will be conducted outside in the Hazelhurst gardens.

Watercolours for Beginners
This is a class for beginners to explore watercolour painting. Experience the delights of using the magic of translucent colour. Working on paper with gouache and multimedia, you will explore numerous techniques. The course incorporates the use of different papers and free wet techniques, along with traditional painting. You will learn basic drawing skills to design your artwork, diverse application techniques and defined detailing. This course does not cater for advanced students.

Watercolours - Intermediate and Advanced
This is a structured program designed for both intermediate and advanced students. Drawing and design will expand your basic skills. This course incorporates the use of different papers and free wet techniques along with traditional painting. The use of gouache and multimedia application is incorporated in this program and the focus is on education. Learn the art of watercolour in a friendly, relaxed environment.

On-Glaze Porcelain Painting
Learn the fine art of porcelain painting in a relaxed and friendly environment. This course caters for a wide range of students from beginners through to advanced students. This course will demonstrate a range of techniques and take you through the basic stages of porcelain art. Firing of your work is included in the course fee.
